Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) is the practical base for Ajanta and Ellora — not a same-day dash from Pune if you want both caves properly. The intercity leg is NH via Ahmednagar; the cave days are local.
Intercity leg
Book Pune to Sambhajinagar cab for hotel or airport drop. Leave Pune by 6 AM for a calm afternoon check-in. Return: Sambhajinagar to Pune.
Cave closures
Ajanta is closed Mondays; Ellora Tuesdays. Plan two full days if you want both. Carry water and shoes — this is not a temple-queue trip like Shirdi.
